Career progression is a vital part of your working life, particularly if you want to earn more cash and have a more fulfilling role. However, knowing how to go about it can be difficult, and you can feel like your job has been pretty stagnant for a while.

Doing the same thing over and over again for years is just not great, but don’t despair! There are many ways to climb the ladder in your chosen profession, you just need to know how. Here are 5 ways that you can do it.

#1: Shift your mindset

If you believe that you deserve to be where you are and stay there, then this is going to hold you back from really succeeding. Think about what you want, and what you’re going to do in order to get it. Then, set about making it happen.

Do your best to rid yourself of doubt and ‘what ifs’ and believe that you can do anything. Let’s be real, if you open your mind, you totally can.

#2: Learn from others

Having a mentor can be a great way to get out of a career slump, and when you’re not quite sure which direction you should be heading in this can make things a lot clearer. Seek out somebody who has got to where you want to be, and do your best to learn from them. Even small pieces of advice here and there could be the difference between you progressing, and you staying where you are.

#3: Improve your resume

If your resume is looking a little unimpressive, then do what you can to improve it. Volunteer somewhere, create something, do anything that is going to set you apart from other candidates for promotion. An online FNP or alternative qualification that you can do from home will allow for some flexibility, and will really put you at an advantage in both the short and long term.

#4: Be confident

The old phrase ‘fake it ‘til you make it’ rings true here, because there’s nothing that your boss will love to see more than a confident candidate. Even if you don’t feel 100% about being the one for promotion, and you feel like self-doubt is creeping in, be sure to look confident and strong. Most people have got to where they are simply by being greatly confident, even if they faked it at first.

#5: Ask your boss what you can do

If you feel like you’re always pushing for career progression but you don’t seem to be getting anywhere, then speak frankly with your boss. Tell them what you want, and ask them how you can get it. Not only does this mark you out as one to watch, but it also means that you can spend your time doing worthwhile things to get to your new role, instead of wasting energy and potentially money on other pursuits.

So, if you want to progress in your career then keep these 5 things in mind. Before you know it, you’ll be exactly where you want to be!
