  • Interesting you would go on the Clinton News Network and trash Trump's brand not thinking you probably have Trump supporters on your email list. What does that do to your brand, Jamie?

    • Hi Randy. Thanks for your comment. CNN asked me to talk about the Trump brand. If the topic of the interview was about the Clinton brand, I would have been equally frank about the struggles her brand faces. Thanks, Jamie

  • Jamie,

    Great interview. You're a natural.

I think the politics also adds that 45% (democrats and liberals) will have a long term negative feeling against him, whereas 45% (republicans and conservatives) will have a neutral or positive opinion. 10% (the rest) probably don't care one way or another. Unfortunately, negatives trump positives and so the brand will suffer long term just along political lines.

If he wins the negatives probably won't change much in the short term, unless as President he can really bring people together. That's doubtful due to the overall divisive political climate in the US.

    • Thanks, Guy. You've got a ton of experience working with major brands around the globe, so I appreciate your thoughts on this subject. Very insightful. Thanks for sharing. Cheers, Jamie

  • Regardless of where you're positioned on the political spectrum, you can't deny Trump is doing damage to his own brand by his current behavior alone, past behavior aside. Even after eliminating some of the more questionable actions and comments which tend to be interpreted to defend one's particular bias, Trump's hubris isn't doing himself any favors. Whether republican or democrat, none of us should turn a blind eye, just because we're vehemently opposed to the other party.

That said, Trump's probably not the first presidential candidate whose personality doesn't exactly charm the public. The only difference is that now one's shortcomings are visible for the whole world to see. I wonder how many past presidents would have survived the scrutiny that political candidates go through, today? Not that that's a bad thing. I just wonder who's good enough anymore to run for president?

I thought you were very fair, simply stating the facts without casting judgement. Nice job.

    • Thanks for your kind words, Brian. And thanks, too, for your good insights about politics and branding -- great stuff. I actually got my first hate Tweets over the segment from Trump supporters who were unaware of the data behind my comments. It didn't bother me at all -- in fact, it's a badge of honor, but my hope for our country is that we can return to a more civil discourse about politics moving ahead. We're better than this and we need to learn how to disagree without being disrespectful. Hope you're doing well. Cheers, Jamie

  • Hi Brian,

yes definitely, though I always wonder if negative press means bad press and negative revenue. We did some work for a major brewing company and their negative press for women, was positive for men and even the allegedly negative press delivered positive sales growth. Of course the positive press delivered much better.

Similarly, (leaving politics aside) it would be an interesting case study to determine the impact of the negative press versus the incredibly positive perceptions he has with his strong followers.
